School Programs for Academic Support
ASL and ELL
ASL (Arabic as second language) and ELL (English language learning) refer to instructional programs for students who are learning Arabic or English as new language. The purpose of the program is to increase the Arabic and English language proficiency of the students so that they can join in the future the regular classes. At the beginning of the year, the students are given a Diagnostic placement test to determine their Arabic and English language proficiency level. Then based on the result of this tests, the teachers’ observation and the information that the parents provide, the decision is made whether the student needs to join the ASL or ELL class or the regular class. The students who have been identified as ASL or ELL students are pulled out of the regular Arabic and some English classes to join the ASLor ELL classes where they receive instruction in groups or on individual bases. During the lessons, the students are continuously assessed to find out if their Arabic/English language proficiency has improved and thus decide what to do next.
