Welcome to Safir International School in Istanbul, Turkey!
Safir International School has earned accreditation for five years by AdvancED Organization in December 2016 as an international school that offers the American program.
AdvanceEd is a non-profit organization that grants accreditation to schools and school systems after conducting on-site evaluation that is based on a set of research-based standards. AdvancED is about a hundred years old as an accreditation organization that is currently serving about 34,000 schools and school systems in the United States and 70 other countries. We are also licensed as an international school by the Ministry of Education in Turkey.
We offer an American program to our Kindergarten to Grade 12 students that is based on California State Standards. We use inquiry-based and hands-on activities to deliver our curriculum. Our teachers use a variety of teaching and assessment methods in order to meet the needs of our students. In addition to using English as the main language of instruction, we teach the Arabic language which is the Holy Quran language. We also teach the Turkish language as a third language which allows our students to mingle and enjoy the country they are living in. In addition to teaching the core subjects, English, Math, Science, and Social Studies, we teach the following subjects: the Holy Quran, Islamic Studies, Islamic History, Arabic, Turkish, Art, Music, Physical Education and Computer & IT. Our students enjoy modern facilities including science labs, computer labs, gymnasium, swimming pool, sports facilities, library and well-equipped classrooms that include smart boards.
We care about the overall well-being of our students; this is why we make sure we take care of their academic, social and emotional needs. We also work on our students’ character building by involving them in activities that allow them to acquire the Islamic values. We offer our students the services of a specialized counselor, a school doctor and a specialized ESL coordinator. We have an after-school program that includes academic support lessons and extra-curricular activities such as Swimming, Football, Music, Art, Drama, and some clubs such as Environmental Club, Community Service and others.
The school is divided into four sections:
Kindergarten: KG1 and KG2
Elementary School: Grades 1-5
Middle School: Grades 6-8
High School: Grades 9-12
In order for our students to graduate and earn Safir American High School Diploma they need to successfully complete some courses during Grades 9-12 from the following subject areas: Math, Science, English, Social Studies, Arabic, Islamic Studies, Islamic History, Physical Education, Computer & IT, Art, Music and World Languages such as Turkish, French or Spanish.
Our high school program is a college-preparatory program, which means we teach the students the concepts and skills that allow them to take certain entrance exams required by most colleges in USA and Canada such as SAT and TOFEL.
We have a college counselor who works with Grade 9-12 students to provide information about universities in Turkey and aboard. The college counselor also provides advice to our students about college admissions process and requirements such as recommendations letters, transcripts and the needed standardized exams they have to take.
We intend to offer starting in September 2017 to our Grade 11 and 12 students Advanced Placement (AP) courses that will increase their chances of being accepted in certain colleges in USA and Canada, in addition to allowing them to earn course credits for the related subjects in certain colleges based on certain scores that they need to earn as set by these colleges.
I have joined SIS after working at international schools in four different countries, in Beirut-Lebanon; in Cairo-Egypt; in Abu Dhabi-UAE and in Istanbul-Turkey. I have also worked in Lebanon, my homeland, on the development of the national science curriculum and wrote three science textbooks for Grades 1, 2 & 3. I have a long experience working on training of teachers, curriculum development and school improvement plans & accreditation process. I have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, a Teaching Diploma and a Master’s Degree in Education from the American University of Beirut. I have also earned a Ph.D. in Education from Saint Joseph University in Beirut.
In a teaching career spanning over 20 years I have come to believe in a constructivist teaching approach and student-centered instruction. Students should be given the chance to construct their own knowledge based on their prior experience and they should be taught the 21st century skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, communication, and ICT skills as well as creativity and global-mindedness. This will enable the students to solve problems they might encounter in their daily life and become life-long learners as well as allow them to be good citizens with an international mind who are willing to share their success with others and also to participate in improving their community and the global community.
